The Basics About Alkalinity verses Acidity

The body’s acidity level usually refers to the amount of acids that one’s body fluid contains, as opposed to the basic level, which refers to the amount of alkalinity one’s body fluid contains. The reason why the body contains the alkaline is to neutralize the level of the acids in the body to keep it normal. If one’s body has too high an acid level, the first thing that one can suffer from is stomach discomfort at a greater level. The body has body fluids like saliva, blood, and urine that aids in the transportation of the acids and alkaline throughout the parts of the body.

The fluids transport the alkaline and acids throughout the body for lubrication, transportation of oxygen, excretion of waste in the body as urine and sweat, as well as transporting nutrients throughout the body. The pH of the body must always be balanced to avoid disrupting the body’s functions. The potential hydrogen is what generally measures the acidity and basic (acid or alkaline) levels in the body. Scientifically, the pH level ranges from 0-14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, or balanced. A pH below 7 is acidic, and a pH above 7 is basic.

The higher the pH level the more likely your body has more fluids, resulting in a higher level of alkaline. On the other hand, the lower the pH level, the lower the amount of fluids in one’s body, hence the higher acidic levels. So, medical doctors usually tell their patients that in order for their body to be healthy and safe, their blood should have a pH level ranging from 7.35 to 7.45; their urine should have a pH level ranging from 4.6 to 8.0, and their saliva should range from 7.0 to 7.5.

In recent days, people have been too busy to take care of their health, and they do not pay close enough attention to the acidity level in their body. The most important thing that one needs to be aware of is that excess acid in the body can lead to a lot of destruction in the body. High acidity can lead to liver damage, heart failure, and it might even destroy some parts of the nervous system. With this in mind, people need to develop a way to help maintain their acidic level in their body.

Here are some signs that one should be aware of that might indicate the acidic level in their body is too high and therefore should take steps to rectify:

1. Excess Weight

Excess weight results from your body having to deal with too much junk in it; the excessive, unnecessary things in your body tend to create an imbalance in the level of acids and bases in your body, therefore resulting in one being overweight. What mainly cause the body tissues to expand is the high level of waste in the body, which can result in a high acidity level. Too much cholesterol, sugars, and sodium, as well as not enough exercise often leads to an increased level of acids, which in turn can lead to one suffering from weight gain.

The excess acids in the body wind up not being eliminated because the waste-carrying organs like the colon, kidneys, lymph system and the skin end up overworking. They eventually get overwhelmed by removing the excess acids. In order to have the body feel comfortable, its organs develop a new habit by finding different places to store the excess acids. This can result in excess weight and is done by the body taking the excess acids and pushing them into the body tissues, like excess cholesterol, and in turn, the acids stick to the fat cells, which then result in the body gaining weight.

The body needs fat cells to store fats and acids that will later be excreted from the body. If the body makes the fat cells store excessive amounts of acids, the excretion becomes difficult. When this happens, the body adapts to the new changes by making the body accommodate the acids, which can lead to excess weight.

The acids come from some of the popular foods that people oftentimes consume, like French fries, sugary drinks, and sodas, as well as alcohol, which leads to more acids in the body. The body might not be able to break down all this waste, and because they can stick in the body, they might not only lead to gaining weight but may also lead to heart disease and kidney failure. The best way to avoid this problem is to consume less of what we mentioned earlier. Eating smaller quantities of these foods, or avoiding them altogether, as well as making sure you drink plenty of water and get physical exercise, may help lower your acidic levels, which in turn may help you lose weight and feel better.

I Changed One Thing! Can You Believe It?

I have always believed that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

My Secret Weapon …

Since the early 1930’s we have known that in order for the body to function properly and to maintain optimum health, the general pH of the human body must be alkaline.  Dr. Arthur C. Guyton, M.D., who is considered the most recognized author on human physiology, has spent the better part of his life studying the pH or acid/alkaline balance of the body.  In his “Textbook of Medical Physiology”, which is used to train medical students today, he states, “The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body.  The second step is to increase the number of negative hydrogen ions.  These are the two most important aspects of homeostasis”.

Dr. Otto Warburg, a noted research scientist, received the Nobel Prize in 1930 for discovering that, “To become malignant, cancer must have a low oxygen and strong acid environment”.  Research by German and Japanese scientists have added that bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast or cancerous cells are not able to reproduce in a highly oxygenated, increased electron and alkaline environment.

Science has known for a long time that the body functions best and stays almost disease free when it maintains a saliva pH which is slightly alkaline or approximately 7.4 on the pH scale.  But how do we get the body alkalized and keep it that way?

You could be missing the powerful healing power of enzymes!

You can eat the best foods all day long, but if you don’t have enough of the right kinds of enzymes you won’t digest and assimilate them.  This makes it very hard to get healthy simply by eating “right”.  So, today we’ll look at the role of enzymes in your body’s quest for homeostasis, i.e. health.

In short, enzymes…

  • are in every living cell and all living organisms.
  • are the life force and catalyst for protein molecules.
  • do not work without co-enzymes – vitamin and minerals.
  • cooked and processed foods do not have the necessary enzymes.
  • come in two types – metabolic enzymes and digestive enzymes.

First let’s look the two types and why it is so very important to take digestive enzymes so your body can actually function without disease.

 Metabolic Enzymes

Over 3,000 metabolic enzymes have been identified as being necessary factors in running the human body.  You need enzymes for cell reproduction, breathing, digestion, nerve transmission, disease protection, and thousands of other biochemical reactions that take place in the body. The body has a limited supply of renewable metabolic enzymes, and the faster you use the enzyme potential you inherited at birth, the quicker you run out of these vital essential enzymes.

The enzymes necessary to digest our foods are contained within that food.  Ripe, raw fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of natural digestive enzymes. When you eat a ripe fruit or vegetable, the enzymes it contains can do almost all of the necessary digestion with very little help of the digestive enzymes secreted by the body. Unfortunately, enzymes can only develop and mature in a natural food source because the enzymes develop along with the food.  Therefore, we would need to eat the food just before it became rotten when it is really just digesting itself. The more natural enzymes a food possesses, the more self-digestion occurs, which lessens the amount of digestive work the body has to do.

However…

What happens when you eat a enzyme deficient, chemically impregnated, highly processed and well preserved meal, which seems to be the favorite of today’s high stress, fast food society?  Well, without the correct enzymes the food you ingest isn’t completely digested or assimilated and can remain in your intestinal tract in this undigested state for months. It is estimated that by middle age many people have as much as 20 pounds of undigested putrefying food in their colon!  As this undigested, putrefying food builds up in the intestine it begins to produce harmful bacteria and poisonous toxins.  This leaves you wide open for degenerative diseases and colon cancer.  It is estimated that 80 percent of all disease conditions can be traced back to a malfunctioning intestinal tract and missing enzymes.

Metabolic vs. Digestive Enzymes

A diet that is lacking in proper digestive enzymes can also disrupt body functions other than the digestive tract. Your body’s 3,000+ metabolic enzymes are in all the cells, tissues, organs, and fluids of the body which are designed to provide energy, fight disease, and make sure the body processes continue to run efficiently.  These metabolic enzymes were not designed to digest food.  But, when you eat enzyme deficient foods, it forces the body to transform  metabolic enzymes into enzymes needed for digestion. So, you are robbing Peter to pay Paul.  This stealing of metabolic enzymes from other sources to fulfill needs of the digestive tract sets up a competition for enzymes among the various organs and system of the body.

As tissues and organs, such as the pancreas, spleen, heart, kidneys, and liver are depleted of their needed metabolic enzymes, they begin to deteriorate and malfunction.  This leads to chronic conditions and degenerative diseases such as allergies, skin conditions, pancreatitis, diabetes, and cancer.

Most of us deplete our natural enzyme levels as we age.  A 70 year old person has about half the enzyme levels of a 20 year old.  But, because of our modern enzyme deficient diet, even 20 year olds are now showing signs of enzyme deficiency.  Essentially, you live as long as your supply of enzymes lasts.  When the time comes that you can no longer make certain enzymes, then total system shutdown is not far away.
